During the design stage, highest priority was therefore given to a flexible lighting solution to enhance the building's architecture and ensure high lighting quality. In addition, the lighting scenario creates a pleasant atmosphere for visitors and staff. The Austrian lighting expert Zumtobel was called in because both the client and the architect needed a top-class partner with international experience and premium advisory skills. Zumtobel developed a custom-made lighting concept involving a number of special solutions for the various functional areas in the Werkraum House. For the part of the building that is open to the public, where various Werkraum members exhibit their work, Zumtobel used 100% cutting-edge LED technology.
The LED option cannot fail to impress thanks to its easy integrability into a lighting management system, so that the lighting can be flexibly controlled whenever events or exhibitions are held. “Lighting is especially important when it comes to presenting the achievements of our craftspeople in the right light in a targeted manner. On the other hand, it is precisely the light, in combination with acoustics, that sets the stage for a room's atmospheric qualities. Here at the Werkraum House you can see a sophisticated combination of artificial lighting and daylight,” says Managing Director Renate Breuss. In order to ensure perfect room acoustics, the open hall of the building where events are held was fitted with a thickly cushioned coffered ceiling made from timber. Zumtobel used a specially designed suspension system to install some 160 LED spotlights of the Panos Infinity range in this area. These downlights provide uniform ambient lighting as well as especially good lighting quality and are also highly efficient. Additional accent lighting and excellent colour rendering are ensured by nearly 90 swivelling Vivo LED spotlights, also fitted with a special pendant suspension system, which are used mainly for highlighting individual exhibits. Hence, Vivo provides accent lighting, creates contrasts and puts the focus on the exhibits, ensuring a fascinating art experience for the visitor.
In order to allow simple connection of the luminaires to the power supply and lighting control system as well as integration of an emergency lighting system, the Tecton continuous-row lighting system is used. This allows quick adjustment of the lighting solution to changing requirements thanks to no-tool installation. Moreover, Zumtobel has proved its flexibility in implementing individual requirements by providing a custom solution for the staircase and sanitary areas. Special downlights were flush-mounted in the concrete ceiling. They provide ideal lighting conditions to facilitate orientation and guidance and at the same time enhance the room's architecture. For emergencies, Zumtobel has installed Puresign and Resclite LED luminaires in the building. On the basement level, perfect orientation is ensured by suspended Tecton luminaires fitted with fluorescent lamps and rugged Scuba luminaires providing uniform lighting.

The plot revolves around the modern urban individual of the 21st century and the role light plays in people's everyday life. Live footage cleverly combined with 3D animations shows how lighting solutions adjust to the respective situation and people's needs in a world of change. The audience follows a man on his way through everyday life, witnessing how light makes living and working easier, enhancing his sense of well-being while increasing the energy efficiency of buildings.
“A good image film not only communicates the messages of a brand but addresses the target group and its needs in every detail. Our corporate production for Zumtobel is a perfect example of a film that credibly and emotionally communicates how a company uses innovative technology to improve the modern individual's quality of life,” says Christian Boros, CEO and Creative Director of the Boros agency, explaining the concept behind the film.
Zumtobel's image film also managed to win this year's “intermedia-globe Gold Award” and “German Design Award Special Mention” prizes.
Red Dot Award
The “Red Dot Award: Communication Design” is a renowned communication design competition. This year, a total of 6812 entries from 49 countries were submitted. Members of the international jury included Taiwanese designer Aaron Nieh, Turkish art director Ali Bati and Scottish designer Jack Renwick, among others. The key evaluation criteria of the entries submitted included originality and emotional quality as well as appropriate addressing of the target group, quality of design, recognition value and relevance for society. On 18 October 2013, the prizes were awarded at a ceremony in the Berlin Concert Hall attended by some 1400 guests from all over the world. The “Red Dot” prize-winning projects will be published in the International Yearbook Communication Design 2013/2014 and displayed at an online exhibition. Moreover, the “Red Dot” has become established as a coveted international quality mark.
The BOROS agency was established in 1990 by Christian Boros. Employing a team of 49 people including designers, web designers, business economists, political scientist, communications experts and German philologists, BOROS develops interdisciplinary communication solutions many of which have received international awards.
Zumtobel. The Light.
The slimline design with a height of only 28 mm is made possible because the light emitting diodes have been integrated into the frame of the pendant luminaire. In order to obtain a well-balanced indirect/direct light ratio, LED light is emitted downwards thanks to litePrint light guide technology. The precisely calculated dot matrix of the litePrint light guide ensures uniform illumination of the complete light emitting panel. At the same time, an exactly defined light component is directed upwards, in specific regions, via openings in the luminaire housing, so that no extra LED modules are required for the indirect component.
Plenty of creative scope for modern office environments that are often modified is provided by the free-standing luminaire. Available with three different luminous flux levels (7,800, 11,000 und 14,800 lm) as well as warm and intermediate colour temperatures, the Light Fields evolution free-standing luminaire offers a variety of application options. The swarmControl technology used here is characterised by two functions that ensure a new dimension of individual lighting quality at workstations: the corridor function and the presence-based function. The fiormer primarily provides for safety and orientation, as the luminaires are dimmed up one by one by means of a built-in presence detector, thus indicating the way to the workstation. The presence-based function, on the other hand, ensures ideal lighting conditions with a mean illuminance level of up to 500 lx at the workstation, while users may adjust the quantity of light to their personal needs at any time using a control panel in the luminaire base. Neighbouring luminaires communicate via swarmControl, providing a cloud of light that creates a pleasant working atmosphere. The sensControl III function increases the free-standing luminaire's efficiency even more. The presence detector automatically switches the luminaire on and switches it off again when the workstation is left unattended. A brightness sensor monitors the illuminance level across the desktop and dims the luminaire depending on the quantity of daylight or artificial light available. Thus, up to 70 percent of energy can be saved, compared to conventional switchable free-standing luminaires.

Perfect lighting quality for a variety of working situations is provided by the patented micro-pyramidal optic (MPO+). The optic's diffuser layer resolves the LED points perfectly, while the high-precision formed micro-pyramids ensure superior lighting quality. The luminaire elements feature innovative technologies providing the best light for workstations. The 3Dprotect reflector protects the LED modules, effectively preventing damage from electrostatic discharge during installation. In order to obtain a well-balanced relation between indirect and direct light, LED light is emitted up-wards and downwards thanks to litePrint light guide technology. Two colour temperatures are available for the luminaire (3,000 K and 4,000 K). With a luminaire efficiency factor of up to 105 lm/W, the LED luminaire also makes a significant contribution towards sustainable added value.
ARCOS xpert LED spotlight
Thanks to its perfect lighting quality and innovative reflector technology, the Arcos xpert LED spot-light cannot fail to impress in museums and art galleries. Due to the high colour rendering index of Ra 94 and the LEDs' narrow colour tolerance, artworks and exhibits can be illuminated authenti-cally to provide visitors with a perfect art experience. The spotlight is optionally available in a warm (3,000 K) or intermediate (4,000 K) colour temperature. Flexibility is ensured by five different re-placeable optics, four different lenses and two louvre options protecting against direct glare. Pin-point superspot light distribution is used to highlight even the smallest details. This high-precision lighting is made possible by a patented tapering dual reflector made of PC developed in-house. The tried-and-tested design of the Arcos spotlight has been left unchanged to allow gallery owners and museum curators to easily extend their existing luminaire portfolio by the spotlight's LED model.
ARCOS LED wallwasher
For illuminating homogeneous areas, Zumtobel now also offers an LED version of the Arcos wall-washer. The wallwashers' uncluttered design language blends unobtrusively into the surrounding architecture, ensuring uniform illumination of vertical surfaces. Thanks to a sophisticated optical solution and constant colour temperature of light emitting diodes, the standard 620 mm version and the short 320 mm version of this dimmable linear wallwasher ensure uniform illumination. Zumtobel relies on top quality in terms of materials as well: the housing is made of extruded aluminium sec-tion, with die-cast aluminium front sides.
VIVO LED spotlight system
For accent lighting in shops and small retail spaces, Zumtobel has added the small Vivo XS spot-light to the Vivo spotlight system and now also offers an LED version of the Vivo M spotlight. This rounds out Zumtobel's LED spotlight range for retail lighting, which now includes suitable lighting solutions for small boutiques with low ceiling heights as well as for display windows and for shops with high ceilings, so that products can be set centre stage in a targeted manner.
The small size of the Vivo XS spotlight is made possible by a combination of compact LED mod-ules and innovative cooling. When looking for a suitable design language, the EOOS designers let themselves be inspired by the shape of a turbine. Thus, the Vivo spotlight makes use of the airflow that is essential for cooling.
Vivo M, one of the most successful products in the Vivo spotlight range, is now also available as an LED version. Thanks to its excellent colour rendering index of more than Ra 90, glare-free light and especially uniform light distribution, the compact and versatile spotlight cannot fail to impress when used for shops or display windows.
IR and UV-free technology makes it possible to illuminate sensitive products, such as groceries for example, very gently. Thus, fruit and vegetables remain luscious, meat stays fresh and textiles retain their colours.
Moisture-proof LED luminaires
Special conditions apply to car parks when it comes to lighting. In addition to the protection rating required (IP 65), the requirements in terms of material and quality are high as well. In addition to the existing portfolio of Chiaro II and Scuba LED moisture-proof luminaires, Zumtobel has now added models with higher luminous flux levels.
The Chiaro II 840 moisture-proof luminaire now optionally delivers 5,900 lm or 6,400 lm with a watt-age of 54 W and is available in either an intermediate or cool colour temperature. Chiaro II achieves significant potential energy savings thanks to its luminaire efficiency factor of 109 lm/W at a colour temperature of 4,000 K or 118 lm/W at 6,500 K.
With an installed load of 54 W, Scuba LED now offers a choice of luminous flux levels of up to 5800 lm (Scuba LED 840) or up to 6300 lm (Scuba LED 765). Two colour temperatures are avail-able depending on specific needs: 4,000 K or 6,500 K. In case of continuous operation, moisture-proof luminaires with a luminaire efficiency factor of up to 108 lm/W (Scuba LED 840) or up to 117 lm/W (Scuba LED 765) have proved to be efficient lighting solutions.
METRUM LED continuous-row lighting system
With Metrum LED, Zumtobel introduces an LED model of the lighting system. Metrum LED cannot fail to impress on account of its straightforward planning and installation. As trunking, luminaire and LED optic form a fixed luminaire unit, installation effort is significantly reduced. Available in two different lengths (2 m and 3 m) and with narrow-beam and wide-angle light distribution, Metrum LED is able to solve a wide variety of lighting tasks. The continuous-row lighting system features high colour rendering (Ra > 80) at an intermediate colour temperature of 4000 K.
CIELOS LED monocolor modular lighting system
Cielos uses diffuse wide-area lighting as a variable, malleable design feature, thereby producing an impressive effect. The LED modules in the new Cielos LED monocolor system ensure excellent light distribution and constant colour temperature. In particular reception areas or conference rooms appear in a positive light to the viewer. Available in two different sizes (600 mm or 900 mm), the square luminaire is the perfect solution for various applications and is also impressively cost-efficient.
ECOOS LED pendant and surface-mounted luminaire
Ecoos LED meets exacting demands when it comes to design, efficiency and visual comfort: an innovative combination of micro-pyramidal optic (MPO+) and diffuser-pearl material enables unique 360° light distribution to ensure the best possible visual comfort and glare control in offices and classrooms. The timeless, sophisticated design of the luminaire adds a perfect flourish to any architectural and lighting design concept. Available as a pendant or surface-mounted LED luminaire in various lengths, this latest evolutionary iteration of ECOOS is particularly flexible in use. LINCOR's clear design language brings a linear look into offices. By its focus on technical essentials and its cross-sectional area of just 6 × 6 centimetres, the luminaire emphasises architectural ideas and blends seamlessly into various settings. The microprisms of the luminance-reducing optic (LRO) reduce harsh shadows in task areas and annoying reflections on screens. The surface-mounted version of LINCOR is the perfect solution for offices with low ceilings. A luminaire efficiency factor of more than 89 lm/W makes Lincor a sustainable office lighting solution.
SINUS LED medical supply unit
Zumtobel introduces Sinus, a flexible LED supply unit that meets various requirements in the health care sector. While doctors and care staff need ideal lighting conditions to perform treatments and examinations, patients need ideal lighting conditions to aid their convalescence. In addition, sustainability and energy efficiency are increasingly important factors, especially for operators and investors. The system can be flexibly adjusted to rooms with one to three patient beds. Fitted with innovative LED technology, Sinus provides room lighting (5940 lm per bed), examination lighting (6770 lm), reading light (830 lm) and night light (50 lm) combined in one medical supply unit. The LED room lighting with indirect light distribution creates a pleasant atmosphere in the patient room. Flexibility for the benefit of patients
When developing Sinus, designer Andrea Ciotti integrated the light emitting diodes that provide reading and examination lighting exclusively in the front part of the supply unit. This makes sure that the entire length of the medical supply unit remains available for mounting a suspension bracket or a storage shelf for depositing personal items of patients.

A daylight-based control system ensures a perfect combination of daylight and artificial lighting and creates optimum lighting conditions for the staff. Changes in lighting intensity are detected by sensors in the rooms and are automatically balanced. The resulting slow increase or decrease of the lighting level is hardly perceivable to the human eye. Despite the high degree of automation, the lighting solution leaves plenty of room for individual preferences, for all staff members can adjust lighting intensity levels, incident sunlight and temperature according to their personal needs.
Using this energy-saving lighting solution largely based on LED and further supported by presence detectors, the i+R Group was able to cut lighting-related energy consumption by up to 70 percent. In collaboration with the lighting designers of the Bartenbach Lighting Laboratory, Zumtobel managed to develop a lighting solution that provides a high degree of flexibility based on cutting-edge technology. Thus, it meets not only the specific needs of the i+R Group and complies with the high standards placed on LEED Platinum certified buildings, but is also sufficiently compatible and adjustable to fulfil the highest requirements in terms of sustainability and comfort in the long term.
Transparency thanks to environmental product declarations (EPD)
Zumtobel is the first company in the lighting industry to introduce environmental product declarations in compliance with the international ISO 14025 and EN 15804 standards. These so-called EPDs document the environmental impact of a product throughout its life cycle, for instance in terms of CO2 balance, recycling percentage, material composition or recyclability. In particular when it comes to building certification standards such as LEED, EPDs ensure the necessary transparency and are an essential component of the certification process.
In addition, Zumtobel supports its partners and customers during the building certification process by providing in-house experts for green building. Thanks to their comprehensive know-how, they are able to give valuable advice regarding the development of a sustainable lighting solution, in particular with respect to the different certification processes.
LEED* (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognised certification system for sustainable building. Besides environmental and economic aspects, it evaluates socio-cultural criteria such as room climate and workplace quality, but also attractiveness of location and technical innovations in design and implementation.

“The new exhibition layout of the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments sets the masterpieces of the collection centre stage. Thus, visitors can enjoy the beauty and technical brilliance of the devices made for the Saxon Court up close and down to the finest detail. Media stations and presentations of historic experiments using replicas illustrate the functions of the instruments that were used for active research on site, at the Dresden Zwinger” – this is how Hartwig Fischer, General Director of the Dresden State Art Collections, explains the new concept. The lighting solution plays an important role against this background: it accompanies visitors along the galleries and pavilions, facilitating orientation and ensuring that they can experience the instruments authentically, while at the same time allowing for targeted and gentle presentation.
LED opens up new opportunities
One of the most important decisions in the context of the new concept was the changeover to an LED-only lighting solution. The minimalist Supersystem LED spots blend unobtrusively into the interior, enhancing the Baroque architecture to optimum effect. It is, however, not only their reduced dimensions and low energy consumption, but above all the LED luminaires' excellent lighting quality that is so impressive: since the new generation of LED luminaires emits significantly less heat and the light they generate is nearly completely free from IR and UV radiation, potential damage is reduced to a minimum. Outstanding colour rendering of more than Ra 90 allows visitors to experience the exhibits in their natural appearance, which could not differ more in terms of materials and colours, for since silver is presented to optimum effect in cool white light colours, warm white is ideal for shades of gold and bronze.
Some 400 exhibits are set centre stage authentically yet gently by approximately 1100 LED spots. Thanks to their performance potential, accent lighting is possible even across longer distances. Here, the modular lighting system is able to proof its outstanding versatility. Depending on the lighting task, various Supersystem models have been installed in the entire exhibition area as well as in public spaces: recessed in the ceiling, surface-mounted or as pendant luminaires. Moreover, the individual spots can be swivelled in and out and rotated in all directions to provide selective accent lighting.
Another characteristic feature of the new lighting solution is the interplay of daylight and artificial lighting. In the bright galleries, which were originally not intended as museums and meet conservational requirements to a very limited extent only, a great deal of sensitivity was necessary to integrate air-conditioning and light-shielding devices in order to protect the precious and sensitive exhibits. Thanks to a built-in DALI unit, Supersystem is compatible to a variety of lighting management systems, and the spots can be subdivided into useful control groups, adjusted to the prevailing lighting situation and set to ideal luminous intensity levels to suit the respective exhibition situation. “The combination of artificial lighting and daylight has been especially adjusted to the requirements of the interior design. State-of-the-art LED technology allows even the presentation of sensitive exhibits in a contemporary fashion, while the original flair of the premises is preserved,” explain Raoul Hesse and Carla Wilkins, the design team of Lightvision, the lighting design studio in charge, who are very pleased with the results.

The newly opened “Museum Ton Schulten” in Ootmarsum is far more than an artistic biography of Ton Schulten, one of the most successful and renowned contemporary Dutch painters. In several rooms, he not only displays his own oeuvre, but also selected works of art by a number of international artists. He placed particular emphasis on an authentic, yet gentle lighting concept. In Zumtobel he found a partner who was able to perfectly implement his demands in terms of colour rendering quality, flexibility and conservational requirements.
Excellent colour rendering
Most of Ton Schulten's paintings show landscapes where nature shines in all her colourful splendour. Visitors are supposed to get the impression of standing right in the middle of such a landscape, experiencing it in natural sunlight. Against this background, the lighting solution faces particular challenges, for while bold blue or green shades are presented to optimum effect in cool white light, warm white is ideal for red and yellow. Hence, colour rendering and colour brilliance were very important aspects in Ton Schulten's decision for the right lighting solution. “I am highly satisfied with the result, because the paintings are presented in a very natural light so that they can unfold their full effect,” says a pleased Ton Schulten.
The solution was provided by a customised version of the Arcos LED spotlight system boasting a colour rendering index of up to Ra > 95 at 2700 K. In order to set the perfect lighting stage for presenting the artworks, a total of 230 spotlights were installed on Supersystem tracks. The dimming level can be adjusted directly on the spotlight, which allows individual adjustment to any exhibit. In addition, a variety of beam angles and an oval outline lens ensure sufficient flexibility to solve the most diverse lighting tasks.
Gentle and efficient illumination
However, the LED lighting solution was able to outcompete conventional halogen lighting not only due to excellent colour rendering, but also thanks to its compliance with conservational requirements. “As the new generation of LED luminaires emits significantly less heat towards the precious exhibits and the light they generate is nearly completely free from IR and UV radiation, we can ensure gentle illumination for sensitive objects as well,” says Barry Harmes from Zumtobel who was involved in the project from the beginning.
This was further corroborated by a study conducted by Zumtobel in collaboration with the Lighting Engineering Department of Darmstadt University of Technology. As part of this study, the quality of various light sources was tested on a real object of art, Picasso's “Harlequin” drawing, using predefined evaluation parameters. Basically, potential damage caused by the LED spotlight is significantly lower at comparable colour temperatures. At the same time, energy efficiency is increased by the LED spotlight, as the input of electrical energy is around 50 percent less than with a halogen spotlight. An additional benefit is the LED's long service life, combined with reduced maintenance effort.

Efficient lighting of the halls
The companies exhibiting their products in the complex of trade fair halls are provided with an area of approx. 38,000 square metres. Zumtobel has equipped this area, too, with a sustainable lighting solution. For perfect lighting of the retail and presentation halls, as well as in the warehouse, the flexible Tecton continuous-row lighting system is used with fluorescent lamps. Tecton is a continu-ous-row lighting system integrating a batten luminaire, lamps and a reflector within its trunking. This allows for easy mounting and reduces installation and maintenance costs. All functions such as power supply, lighting control and connection to the emergency lighting system can be inte-grated into the trunking thanks to a built-in current conducting section. In the area of the escalators, the hall lighting is complemented by the » Panos Infinity LED downlight range, which boasts excel-lent lighting quality and particularly high efficiency. Zumtobel has additionally fitted the trade fair halls with the Puresign and Resclite LED luminaires combined with compact fluorescent lamps for emergencies.

About 90 percent of the lighting solution are custom solutions, including more than 1400 special luminaires. Furthermore, Zumtobel developed so-called multi-functional mono-points (MMP) for the exhibition areas and the foyer, which allowed unobtrusive homogeneous installation despite the building's slightly conical layout. MMPs are concrete casting boxes with a diameter of 90 millimetres. Recessed into the ceiling along a grid, they allow flexible integration of luminaires, loudspeakers or heavy-duty elements. The MMP automatically detects when a luminaire is installed and connects it to the central Luxmate Litenet lighting management system. Using Luxmate, the museum's entire lighting solution can easily be controlled with high precision. The system combines complex qualities to form a central unit that can be operated and configured thanks to especially developed graphic user interfaces via smartphones and tablets. In addition, Zumtobel has developed a special addressing concept for the illumination of exhibition spaces which allows for luminaires installed in retrospect to be integrated into the existing lighting solution immediately.
Innovative luminaires for demanding tasks
For uniform vertical illumination of walls, with the light centre at eye level, Zumtobel used wall-washers as suspended pendant luminaires with a length of 470 millimetres. Moreover, two pivoting LED luminaires – a simple recessed spotlight and a suspended version with five integrated spots – enable accent lighting of the exhibits. Above all, they boast very high colour rendering (Ra > 90) and excellent lighting quality. Their UV- and IR-free light is also particularly gentle on the exhibits. This combination is also used in the show depot where special objects are presented behind glass panels. Here, the luminaires are mounted on Tecton trunking. Tecton is a continuous-row lighting system which, thanks to its built-in 11-pole current conducting section, connects the luminaires with all functions such as power supply or lighting control. This allows absolutely flexible mounting positions and reduces costs for both installation and maintenance. Thus, additional luminaires can be added to the Tecton trunking for special exhibitions.
For perfect illumination of the foyer, Zumtobel relies on a combination of custom-made LED downlights, LED spotlights, HIT downlights and halogen spotlights. In the next room, the light-flooded atrium, daylight is enhanced by soft indirect lighting provided by minimalist Arcos spotlights.
In the museum café, Zumtobel added a decorative lighting installation consisting of some 30 halogen luminaires with fabric shades providing cosy light that entices guests to stay for a while.
In the administrative area, mainly luminaires with fluorescent lamps are used. Thus, the Freeline luminaire as pendant luminaire achieves perfect lighting conditions in the offices, thanks to its uniform light distribution. In the rooms where events are to be held, special lighting systems fitted with fluorescent lamps and halogen lamps provide both pinpoint and linear lighting. For the staircase of the new building, Zumtobel has developed another LED downlight, taking into account the sloped ceiling. In the staircase of the old building, the challenge was to follow the contours of the historic window arches and produce an appropriate light distribution.
About the “vorarlberg museum”
The “vorarlberg museum” is situated in the four-border region of Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Liechtenstein, and is a classical museum of cultural history that provides insights into the regional history of Vorarlberg. The oldest museum in the Lake Constance region, it is based on the collection by the Vorarlberg Regional Museum Association founded in 1857. The museum accommodates some 150,000 exhibits from the fields of art, history, ethnology and archaeology and organises special exhibitions on a regular basis.

The latest generation of LED luminaires demonstrate their skills
The focus is on presenting products based on cutting-edge LED technology that per-fectly combine the potential to save energy with lighting comfort. Visitors will learn eve-rything there is to know about the most recent products and will also be able to test them in various applications; individual models for specific projects can also be set up in these rooms.
A special feature of the showroom: natural daylight is deliberately used to create a pleasant room ambience. Moreover, this allows a direct comparison of the effects and quality of artificial lighting and daylight. For one of the highlights of the new showroom is the demonstration of the Tunable White technology, which makes it possible for the first time to create artificial lighting that has the quality of daylight. The visitors' attention is also attracted by a shop window installation and a small model of a museum. The entire wealth of options available to set goods and objects centre stage is authentically pre-sented here to optimum effect.
By presenting a small “bouquinerie”, “La Lumière d’Uzès” makes a reference to Parisian culture as well. 20 award-winning Zumtobel annual reports are displayed in an exhibi-tion modelled on a typical Parisian book stall, each of them a unique copy produced in cooperation with renowned artists and designers.
An attractive location
Austrian luminaire manufacturer Zumtobel has been operating its own sales organisa-tion in France, Zumtobel Lumierè, since 1979. “The new offices and the Light Center on Rue d’Uzès, right in the heart of Paris, are an important step for us. They emphasise our presence on the French market, bringing us closer to our customers and partners,” says Bruno Touzery, Managing Director Zumtobel France, who is pleased about the new location. The central location combined with stylish design and a relaxed atmos-phere make the new Light Center an attractive meeting place that can also be used by customers and partners for meetings and events.

The Zumtobel image film won an intermedia-globe gold award in the “Public Relations /Company Philosophy and Portrait” category. The Boros agency and the Zeitsprung Commercial GmbH film production company jointly created a 1:30-minute film, which is impressive in terms of both visual effects and narrative. “We want to use light to create worlds of experience, make work easier and improve communica-tions and safety while always remaining fully aware of our responsibility to the environment. The film communicates this message very successfully and in accordance with the taste of its target group,” says Stefan von Terzi, Director Marketing Zumtobel, who is very pleased about the award.
The plot revolves around the modern urban individual of the 21st century and the role light plays in his everyday life. Live footage cleverly combined with 3D animations shows how lighting solutions adjust to the respective situation and people's needs in a world of change. The audience follows a man on his way through everyday life, witnessing how light makes living and working easier, en-hancing his sense of well-being while increasing the building's energy efficiency. It is an impressive and emotional story of how Zumtobel seeks to provide optimum lighting quality for people while protecting the environment. “A good corporate production not only communicates messages but also reflects a deep understanding of the target group addressed and its needs. The Zumtobel image film is a great example of how companies use state-of-the-art technology to improve modern people's quality of life,” explains Christian Boros, CEO and Creative Director of the Boros agency, the concept behind the film.

Sustainable lighting solution by Zumtobel for the first timber hybrid high-rise building
The LifeCycle Tower One in Dornbirn is the world' first uncased timber high-rise building. It sets new standards with respect to sustainability, efficient use of resources and quality of life. For this award-winning building, Zumtobel has developed a trend-setting lighting concept that includes an intelligent lighting control system to maximise lighting comfort and increase efficiency.
Intelligent lighting management
Luxmate combines complex system features such as use of daylight, presence detectors, integration of emergency lighting, and predefined room profiles in one central unit that can be easily operated. The daylight available is perfectly integrated into the lighting solution by the control system. The daylight sensor on the roof of the building continually monitors the incident light, ensuring that in each room only the quantity of artificial lighting is added that is required. Luxmate also controls the blinds, which in automatic mode can be adjusted to the prevailing lighting conditions and sunlight. This prevents glare and excessive build-up of heat in the rooms. Another feature of the lighting control system is the flexible change of colour temperatures and the quantity of light. Dynamic lighting demonstrably has a major impact on people's sense of well-being and productivity. Carefully thought-out lighting scenes are defined in advance, stored, recalled and modified as required. Moreover, Luxmate controls the entire LED emergency lighting system. This ensures low maintenance effort.
The latest in lighting technology: flexible and user-oriented
Panos Infinity high-performance LED spotlights, among others, have been installed in the ceiling. The general lighting system also includes Supersystem spots for accent lighting. The lighting concept is backed by presence detectors, which allow for intelligent control and lighting.This means that perfect lighting is available only when it is actually needed. The presence detectors used for the lighting solution also control the heating. In order to reduce energy consumption, presence detectors have been installed in the transit areas, corridors, toilets and in the staircase as well.
Exemplary energy efficiency
Using an intelligent lighting management system such as Luxmate, energy can be saved on a permanent basis: presence detectors or pre-defined switch-on times allow for potential savings of 20 to 40 percent. By making optimised use of daylight, up to 75 percent of lighting energy can be saved. Using dimmable luminaires, energy consumption can be reduced further by some 25 percent. Properly coordinated control of lighting and blinds reduces the cooling load of a building and improves lighting quality as well. The result is greater independence in the face of energy price increases and a sustainable drop in costs and CO2 emissions.

One of Austria's most important cultural projects is the reopening of the Kunstkammer (lit-erally, chambers of art and natural wonders) in Vienna. Zumtobel was able to make an es-sential contribution ensuring the state-of-the-art presentation of this unique collection by providing a very special lighting solution.
Zumtobel has developed a customised LED lighting solution in order to obtain a highly differenti-ated, gentle and effective illumination of the various objects on display. “The point was literally to present the objects in the best possible light. All exhibits are originals, and each of them has its very special aura that we want visitors to be able to feel and experience,” says Sabine Haag, Gen-eral Director of the Kunsthistorisches Museum. At the heart of the lighting solution is the Starbrick, a Zumtobel Masterpiece developed in collaboration with Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson. Boasting unpretentious elegance and multi-functionality, the Starbrick is the only representative of contemporary art and cutting-edge technology in these rooms of the museum that were opened for the first time in 1891. The installation includes a total of 51 Starbrick assemblies consisting of four modules each, especially designed for illuminating the unique and sensitive works of art. Additional direct light is ensured by integrated Supersystem spotlights and indirect light is provided by a Panos Infinity module, while one of the Starbrick's surfaces that is directed downwards doubles as emergency lighting. “Due to the height of the ceiling, we had to increase the levels of light intensity, but the original shape of the Starbrick remained unchanged. Taking the historical rooms into par-ticular consideration, a highly specific Starbrick assembly was created, so that the modules work like a picture, like stars in the sky,” explains Olafur Eliasson.
In addition to LED Supersystem spotlights mounted on the walls, single Supersystem spotlights were also installed in the showcases. Especially in the showcases, each of them a highly sensitive closed system, the benefits of LED technology can be fully exploited. Thus, light-emitting diodes not only boast a long service life and high energy efficiency, combined with reduced maintenance cost, but also ensure an effective and at the same time gentle presentation of the exhibits. More-over, the light colours can be individually matched to the colours and materials of the exhibits, so that they can unfurl their full charm and allow visitors to experience them authentically.
"Illuminating this significant and unique collection in a contemporary way has been a special project for us. In collaboration with architects, designers and Olafur Eliasson we managed to develop a lighting solution that is in line with the new concept of the Kunstkammer, meeting the most de-manding conservation requirements and providing the best light for an unrestricted enjoyment of art,” says Reinhardt Wurzer, Director International Projects, Zumtobel Lighting.
About the Starbrick
Four individual works of lighting art, the Masterpieces, have been created in close cooperation between Zumtobel and international architects, designers and artists. The Starbrick is a versatile lighting module. Its basic structure is a cube, on whose six surfaces additional cubes have been placed at an angle of 45°. These additional cubes serve as connectors to combine several Star-brick modules.

Olafur Eliasson was born in Copenhagen in 1967, where he studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. In 1995, he established the Berlin-based Studio Olafur Eliasson, a laboratory for spa-tial research, where jointly with a team of architects, art historians as well as materials and lighting experts he creates works of art such as extensive installations, photo series and sculptures.
